New Year Resolutions and Their Impact on Your Business

Once the New Year comes around, it seems everybody wants to set new resolutions. And why not? A new year can be a great time to reflect, revise and reset.

Resolutions often fail though, because creating a new habit and giving up an old one is hard work. Our brains naturally want to lead us back into our usual patterns!

Author and entrepreneur James Clear says your life is basically the sum of your habits. To create a new habit, the key is consistency. Having a defined intention you can commit to help make this happen. This might be as simple as saying, “I will do A/B/C at 10am every Tuesday” and so on. You are also more likely to stick to a resolution by creating just one goal at a time.

Once you develop a new habit and keep at it, it eventually becomes automatic. However, that process can take months so you may need some patience!

As a business owner, you may want to create some new resolutions for your business for the year. Here are some examples:

  • Start planning your day better. This might mean writing down tasks the night before and ticking them off your list as you go.
  • Say no more often. Are you a people pleaser? This can cause you to get tired and lose focus. Learn when to say ‘no’.
  • Delegate more. If you are the sort that likes to do it all yourself, commit to taking more breaks and to ‘letting go’ by giving more work to others.

Business and personal goals can also overlap. For example, people often have personal resolutions to eat well, exercise and get more rest – all of which will help your business in the long run, as you’ll feel better and have more energy!
